Mistletoe Leaf  Viscum album (Viscaceae)

Viscotoxin

General Information
Mistletoe, a semiparasitic plant, holds interest as a potential anticancer agent because extracts derived from it have been shown to kill cancer cells in vitro [1-10] to down-regulate central genes involved in tumor progression, malignancy, and cell migration and invasion, such as TGF-β and matrix-metalloproteinases. [11,12] Mistletoe extracts have been shown to enforce natural killer cell-mediated tumor cell lysis, reduce the migratory and invasive potential of tumor cells, and stimulate immune system cells both in vitro and in vivo. [10-31] Three components of mistletoe, namely viscotoxins, Lectinss, and lectins, may be responsible for these effects. [10,13-15,19-21,23-25,32-39]

Phytonutrients, such as the compound found in the extracts of Viscum album (Viscaceae), have been shown to restore the body’s ability to fuel the immunologic response. Viscum album (Viscaceae) has been shown to target cancer cells by blocking the formation of new blood vessels. Alkaloids are mainly found in plants and some fungi. These nitrogen-based substances are found in products such as coffee and vincristine, which is also an anti-cancer drug. It may also be beneficial for reducing the potential side effects of cancer treatments. A large clinical trial in Germany found that cancer patients that took a certain Viscum album (Viscaceae) liquid extract lived 40 percent longer, and had a significantly higher quality of life than those who did not take the extract.

It has a reputation for regulating and strengthening the heartbeat, as well as regulating a fast heart rate, from feeling nervous. However, this test was only carried out in animal studies. It is also said to relieve the temporary headaches associated with high blood pressure.
